Igo (Go)
Igo was developed in China around 1400 BC. The Japanese has since adopted Igo and fervently embraced it for centuries. Samurai soldiers' back plates of their armor had an Igo board made into it. The game was considered great tactical training. It is the national game of Japan. The board is 19x19 intersections (intersections are used, not the squares of which there are 18x18).

Go-Moku (Pente)
Go-Moku is a game played on the same board as Igo. It is kind of the checkers of Igo. Books say women and children more commonly play this game in Japan. Most of the Japanese I have known are afraid to play Igo but, are willing to play Go-Moku. I enjoy the Pente version of this game better because there are more rules (e.g. capturing). The rumor of pente was that it was started in french cafés on the checkered table cloths. Game manufacturer's sometimes attribute the egyptians for creating the game. I think Go-Moku was brought to Europe and that the rules were remembered differently than the orientals had taught.
